Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a kind psychotherapy often used in cases of trauma or other anxiety disorders. An integrative therapy, this technique involves identifying trauma and triggering thoughts or events, using negative thoughts and eye movements to lessen reactions to trauma, and using positive thoughts to replace negative thoughts.
These standardized protocols use elements from other therapy and treatment approaches. While this may be a newer therapy, EMDR has been proven to have helped millions of people of all ages with different kinds of psychological stress. Selective mutism is considered a childhood anxiety disorder. Those affected by selective mutism speak freely and openly in settings where they feel comfortable, such as the family home and with people they have a strong relationship with; however, they either severely struggle to or do not speak at all in more public settings where that comfort is lost, such as in school or with people they don’t know.
